Facial wrinkles are, for the most part, caused by constant movement of the muscles to form facial expressions. These wrinkles are prominent when a facial expression is formed. At a younger age, the skin simply springs back into the original position but these wrinkles start to end up fixed in place as we age. This is caused by the lack of collagen in the skin as well as hyaluronic acid and elastin. The production of these decreases as people age. There are also environmental factors including exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress which contribute to the increasing wrinkles and folds on the skin.

There are injections available which relax wrinkles and treat dynamic wrinkles which are caused by facial expressions.
